2734 Sorting the rough diamonds. De Beers Mines, Kimberly, South Africa (S834)

Stereocard
Jefferson Stereoptics
On the back there is a section that reflects on trhe values of the time the photograph was taken:

"People and Homes - The De Beers Company houses its native workmen in a vast, fenced in, wired-over compound. The men are practically prisoners; many are in fact government convicts. The mine is entered by subterranean passages. No visitors are allowed and no visiting. But they have a school, a hospital, a store, and the (to them) fabulous wage of 18 - 3 [unreadable] shillings a week. At the end of his term of service the Kaffir can go home to his wives, his patch of "mealies" and his cows a rich man".
