Larson states: "The early fax technology, although slow in transmitting (6 minutes per 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper) produced relatively high resolution for reproduction of visual materials. Since it translated everything into an audio signal to be sent via telephone, it read everything from images to classical music as a simple digital code, which was then converted into corresponding voltage levels to literally burn the image(s) into their special paper at the receiving end. It was also possible to manipulate the image, while it was printing, by simply moving the stylus as it burned the image into paper."
