(Kent Thompson, 17 May 2022) Carbine Williams is well known as the inventor of the floating chamber used in the M1 carbine. He made a number of guns while in prison--this was one of the first prototype carbines he made in 1925 at Caledonia Prison Farm, all from hand tools and materials he scavenged from the prison shop. The stock here was made of a walnut fence post from the prison.

His story became a popular movie with same name, Jimmy Stewart played his role. The museum has an absolutely huge collection of Carbine Williams materials and firearms. I have done a lot of work on that collection. Very colorful story with moonshine and all sorts of history wrapped up and many popular figures of the past
