Proof for a large woodcut campaign poster or banner for Democratic presidential nominee James Buchanan. A bust-length portrait of Buchanan (apparently taken from Mathew Brady's 1854 daguerreotype portrait) is flanked by American flags and laurel branches.

Notes
Title from item.

"Entered … 1856, by Baker & Godwin … New York."

The Library's impression of the work was deposited for copyright by Baker & Godwin in the Southern District Court of New York on June 23, 1856.

Probably produced by Baker & Godwin, judging from similarities in execution and format to other banners by the firm such as "Col. Fremont Planting the American Standard on the Rocky Mountains" (no. 1856-5), deposited shortly thereafter.

Published in: American political prints, 1766-1876 / Bernard F. Reilly. Boston : G.K. Hall, 1991, entry 1856-2.
