Pompeii. The Basilica

Daguerreotype
National Science and Media Museum
Part of the Ellis group of daguerreotypes, Inventory no: 1890-56-Pp3

Pompeii. The Basilica, seen from just beyond the Western side of the Forum. View of stone flooring (some stones are missing showing the ground beneath, with plants growing) from which arise a forest of columns. The two in the foreground are fluted, the upper parts missing. Beyond, on the right is a stone plinth, possibly an altar. Three simple columns in the mid area are Doric (Roman Doric?), and many further columns visible beyond. There is a brick and rough stone structure on the left hand side. In the distance are spindly trees, and the slope of a hill rising to the right.
