Historical note (translated from Italian).
Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenez d'Aragona was born in Florence in 1813. An engineer and architect, he decided to retire, just over forty years old, to his estates in Sammezzano, in the Upper Valdarno area. There, beginning in 1845, construction of the castle began: the work would continue until 1890, following a design that combined Arab-Moorish elements (such as the Alhambra in Granada) with Indo-Persian ones, in a fully eclectic style. The eight photographs by Paganori document some of the castle’s interiors, including furnishings, inscriptions, and heraldic weapons, though they are unable to technically convey the extraordinary polychromy achieved through the use of ceramics as a decorative motif unifying all the rooms of the palace. The photographs date from after 1880, as evidenced by the dry stamp of the photographer indicating his studio on Via della Scala, where Paganori moved in that very year. The Faccioli photographic collection consists of loose prints or prints mounted on support, collected during the career of engineer-architect Raffaele Faccioli (Bologna, 1836–1914). After his death, the surveyor Luigi Mattioli, administrator of the heirs’ estate, proposed to Francesco Malaguzzi Valeri—then Director of the Pinacoteca of Bologna—the acquisition of this graphic archive, which includes drawings, notebooks, and photographic material. Documentation on the collection can be found at the l'Archivio Storico della Pinacoteca, pratiche n. 31, foglio 43, n. 9
