Collage of Napoleon Bonaparte in his classic pose, which is composed of 12 real photo postcards.

Collage
Swann Galleries - New York
Sale 2345, The Vernacular Eye: Photographic Albums, Snapshots & Objects, 17 April 2014, Lot: 62

The pictorial composition of each print situates the actors in one area of the image while a montaged photographic reproduction (of an historic engraving) is in an another. The entire set combines to present a puzzle-like presentation of a Napoleon in a full standing pose. Images depict Napoleon as both a loving husband and father (with Josephine and his daughter) and a keen military strategist, who gallantly prances on a white horse and is ready for battle. Real photo silver print postcards, 3 1/4x5 1/2 inches (8.3x14 cm.), overall size 22x11 inches (55.9x27.9 cm.), a few are delicately hand-tinted, and with 12 red canceled postage stamps bearing the marks of Anvers and Antwerp; framed. 1910.
