Madam Candelaria's real name was Andrea Castanon Villanueva (1785-1899), but after marrying Mr. Candelario Villanueva in San Antonio, she was known as Madam Candelaria. She claimed to have been in the Alamo during the battle of 1836. In 1891, the State of Texas awarded her a pension for being an Alamo survivor (The Handbook of Texas Online).
