A wonderful documentation of gold mining in the Anvil Creek region of Alaska. Signed in negative lower left of image "104. W. Hester Photo, Seattle" signed lower right of image "No.8 Anvil" The University of Washington owns Hester's archive. Note the African American miner. Hester was a photographer from Germany who had a studio in the Pacific Northwest in the 1890's. In 1898 he joined throngs of gold seekers by traveling to Alaska. This is believed to be a photo of his claim. He retired from the photography business in 1905 and invested his gold mining profits from in real estate.
