The photographs of Coste (1861-1932) shown at the 1896 salon: "enjoyed great success, owing to the technical mastery he demonstrated with his chiaroscuros and in his carbon prints of landscapes. At the following year's salon he won recognition as an art photographer with his print May Morning in the Morvan, which was judged to be a "real masterpiece." (
