When it is rolled up it buttons into an 18" wide black leather cylinder. When unrolled it reveals 3 crayon portraits in different styles: these are photographic enlargements that are then worked on by hand. They are 16" x 18", backed by cloth. One, of a gentleman, is colored over with charcoal. Another, of his wife, is worked over in brown. The main attraction is a wonderful portrait of a child, in full color. Overpainted enlargements were a major form of photographic commerce in the late 19th Century, that included overpainted tintypes. This portfolio is an important object showing the commercial solicitation of customers for this process.
