René Groebli visited London in 1953 and by chance encountered Beryl Chen, a young woman recently arrived in the city along with many other immigrants seeking a better future. Her Jamaican mother and Chinese father far away, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and affirmation, and agreed to be photographed by Groebli. Using his Leica camera with black and white film, he mixed reportage and artful storytelling in an attempt to document her life in this new, daunting city.
