Unidentified photographer 1850 (ca) Three men on a railroad handcar
Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Archives of Modern Conflict OR National Gallery of Canada This is the flywheel type as opposed to the seesaw type and two men crank the flywheel to supply the energy to run the car. There are two lunch pails on the forward platform of the car of which one is a good example of 19th century toleware. The boss sits behind the two gandy dancers who have placed their prying tools named gandys in the bed of the car. (Matt Isenburg)
