Curatorial notes from the National Portrait Gallery
An engraving of this photograph was used as the frontispiece to Speke's Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile (1863). Speke is shown in his expedition clothes with sextant and shotgun. The studio backdrop shows an imaginary view of Lake Victoria.
