A view showing a beggar woman and her two children standing in the street. The photograph appears in Thomson's 'Through Cyprus with the camera, in the autumn of 1878' (vol.1, London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, 1879). It is annotated: 'The woman shown in the present picture was evidently no professional beggar. She simply presented herself at the doorway of the house where I happened to be lodging; there she waited silently until someone came and spoke to her and gave bread to her children, which they greedily devoured' (vol.1, p.19).
