The ability of a photograph to record and act as a surrogate witness to a specific moment in time has been at the heart of photographic practice. When Joel Meyerowitz was standing in a crowd viewing the remains from the collapse of the Twin Towers, a police officer reminded him that it was a crime scene and no photographs were allowed. "To me," said Meyerowitz, "no photographs meant no history. I decided that my job was to make a photographic record of the
aftermath."
