Platt D. Babbitt n.d. Col. Duryea's Regiment, Fort Schuyler, Long Island Sound
Glass stereoview. half Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc Courtesy of Larry Gottheim (Auction: Feb 21, 2008, 51, part 1 / lot 67)
Glass stereo view by Platt Babbitt. Tents set up in the yard of the fort. Duryea and other officers at mess, with black servants. A rare and important view by Babbitt, and the only one I've seen outside Niagara. See the article by Michael McAfee, "5th New York, 'The Red Devils'" in MILITARY IMAGES, Feb/March 2002. I had a special interest in Babbitt because of my long-time interest in the work of George Stacy, whose Niagara views somewhat overlapped with Babbitt's. It seemed significant that Duryea's 5th New York Zouave regiment would soon be photographed at Fortress Monroe in a celebrated series by Stacy.
