Photography was brought to Scotland by the friendship of its inventor, William Henry Fox Talbot, with Sir David Brewster of St Andrews. Dr John Adamson became involved and he encouraged his younger brother Robert to take up the new art professionally. St Andrews, once a cathedral city and Scotland's main pilgrimage place in medieval times, is now known mainly for its University and for its golf course - both of these started in the 15th c. Its appearance today is much the same as it was in the 1840s.
