This image was made during a trip from Karack to Chauback in 1866. In 1866 the Duke de Luynes travelled through North Africa for the purpose of inspecting and bringing back visual records of the region's major antiquities and historic sites. Accompanying him were the photographers Louis Vignes and Henri Sauvaire. They required a medium that was adaptable to the heat, unbreakable and light enough for their lengthy travel itinerary. They chose calotype paper negatives. The image was later published as a lithograph in Voyage D'Exploration a La Mer Morte, 1871 - 1876.
