Silver salts on paper - Gelatin silver process
25 x 20 cm

McCord Stewart Museum
(Nora Hague, 18 January 2022) The result of storing the paper print in the same envelope as a nitrate negative.

The print was carefully peeled/picked off the negative and sandwiched between two pieces of optically clear glass, with an air gap to prevent Newton's rings.

When the Notman fonds was transferred to McGill, many of the later negatives were on a nitrate base. There were whole shelves of negatives side-by-side with glass dry plates, prints stored in the same paper envelope and cardboard separators. The whole thing was glued together into a 200 negative fused block. There were no images to rescue so the whole dangerous mass was disposed of.
