William Notman
1868
Eaton stove, Montreal, QC

Albumen print
8.5 x 5.6 cm

McCord Stewart Museum
Purchase, funds graciously donated by Maclean's magazine, the Maxwell Cummings Family Foundation and Empire-Universal Films Ltd., Accession Number: I-30506.1

(Nora Hague, 23 January 2023) Notman frequently worked with John Walker, a master engraver, producing the photographs from which Walker made printable images. This stove was one of three photographed by Notman and used by Walker, probably for a catalog, but it might have been for an advertisement in a newspaper. The McCord [Museum] is lucky in having both Notman's picture books and negatives, and Walker's voluminous scrapbooks.
