Kneeling boldly, with one knee on an outcropping of papier-m"ché rock, his instrument aimed like a telescope at some distant horizon, this surveyor seems a spiritual descendent of the great western explorers -- perhaps midway between Lewis & Clark, and the modern surveyors employed to determine whose fence posts or utility lines are located on whose side of 1/2 acre plots.
