I think the photograph was made about 1988, around the same time I visited his wife, Juliet. She was living in an apartment, no longer in the their home/studio which had suffered water damage from leaky skylights. She was very gracious and welcoming but didn't want to be photographed anymore, so I made this photo instead, inspired by Man Ray's great painting of his street at night.
