The mill was built in 1864 by George Brinton and was later acquired by Sellers Hoffman in 1872. The mill remained in the Hoffman family through the 1940s. In the late 1960s, the building was purchased by the Brandywine Conservancy and opened in 1971 as part of the Brandywine River Museum.
