(Joan Hostetler, Facebook, 29 June 2021) No, not *that* Mathew Brady. Shown is the Petersburg, Indiana gallery of Mathew J. Brady. Like most galleries operating prior to electricity, it was located on the top floor of a commercial building to take advantage of a skylight. Note the framed photos displayed near a door leading upstairs under his sign. The studio is located above a hardware selling shovels, stoves, and other goods.

Mathew J. Brady (b. 1832 or 1836, d. 1905) immigrated to the United States in 1844 from Ireland and served in the Civil War. Before becoming a photographer he was a carriage painter in Princeton in Gibson County, Indiana and appears to have had a studio there before moving to Petersburg.
