In 1896 J. Craig Annan published a luxurious portfolio of prints, Venice and Lombardy: A Series of Original Photogravures, that collected views from his travels to Italy. Six of the works by Annan in the Art Institute's Stieglitz Collection, among them A Venetian Requiem, were included. In these works Annan expertly combined photographic detail with the smears and smudges of the ink used in the photogravure printing process.
