This photograph comes from the family of Irwin Welcher. He was a master printer who worked very closely with Dorothea Lange on her 1966 MoMA retrospective exhibition and this print dates from around that time. While this print was not used in the MoMA exhibition, it appears to have been made from contact printing enlarged negatives on a single sheet of photographic paper. Lange took the original photographs using a 4x5 in. negative size and these have been enlarged to 8x10 in. for this printing. This masterwork of photographic printing includes a sixth image from the series that is not part of the Library of Congress collection, a print of which can be found in the Dorothea Lange Archive at the Oakland Museum. No other similar prints have being located except for a much smaller version in the collection of the National Gallery of Art.
