Mark Osterman n.d. Photographers Eye Rests - From the Tomishige Studio, these were placed in front of the subject being photographed who was asked to look at a number.
Colour photograph Provided by the artist - Mark Osterman (Mark Osterman, 26 July 2022) I copied this from a catalog I got when in Kumamoto, the town where the studio still exists. The artifacts are in the local prefecture museum. You are welcome to it. We use one in our studio but have never seen a photograph of one in use, only engravings in catalogs selling them. They also came with a tiny mirror for the subjects to see themselves.
We use a metal rod with a brass ball on the top that is adjustable for height. It's on a cast iron stand on wheels, so very easy to move it around the studio. Once you have one you don't know how you got along without it.
