This print forms part of Norfolk Record Office holdings from the following archive: Eaton Collection, reference ETN 3/6/6/1-2 (Framed photographs taken by Dr Hugh Welch Diamond, acquired by T.D. Eaton). The 'Catalogue of Exhibits' for an exhibition entitled ' Hugh Welch Diamond, Doctor, Antiquarian and Photographer' (which took place at Twickenham in August 1980) states that this portrait is also known as 'Puerperal Mania Stage III'. It is inscribed with 'passive' on the reverse side of the frame. It is one of two portraits of a young mother from a series of four published as engravings by Dr. Connolly 'On the Physiognomy of Insanity', in 'Medical Times and Gazette', June 1858. The catalogue states that 'Dr Connolly believed these to be the first attempts of Dr Diamond to delineate by photography, the progressive changes in mental disease'.
