Born Lady Elizabeth Hay, her parents, the Marquess and Marchioness of Tweeddale, were also visitors to Silvy's studio, as was her sister, Lady Jane Hay. From 1843 to 1858 the Duchess of Wellington was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria, and from 1861 to 1868, Her Majesty's Mistress of the Robes. The Duchess was again Mistress of the Robes from 1874 to 1880.
