It's significant because the First Families have traditionally had dogs and until Roy Cooper was elected in 2016, there have been no cats as "official" first pets. Broughton's family cat was the one standout in the 20th century and photos in state archives and other institutions have been few showing the cat. The Cooper household is now filled with a menagerie of cats, dogs and other creatures including at one time a praying mantis.
