John Stull Viewing Case with daguerreotype

Daguerreotype stereo viewer
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim - Be-Hold (49 / 37)

This very rare case was patented in Philadelphia just a few years after Mascher's. The ornately decorated cover with eyepieces lifts up by folding brass supports. There is a 1/4 plate with side-by-side 1/9 plate images in a + plate size brass mat with oval windows.

The stereoscopic image is of a very old gentleman, born before the Revolution. The top knob of his cane extends out.

The gilded eagle design and lettering on the dark green leather cover are somewhat soiled from use. The same design on the back is cleaner. (Larry Gottheim)
