David Franklin Thorpe was part of a group of northerners who went to South Carolina under the auspices of the Massachusetts Humane Society in March 1862. Later that year, he became plantation superintendent at the Thomas J. Fripp Plantation on Saint Helena Island. During the war, he leased and purchased property in in the area. Note slight differences in the people on each side of the card indicating the photographers did not use a double lens stereo camera, which would have taken the two images simultaneously.
