Aenne Biermann was a self-taught photographer who worked relatively apart from the European avant-garde although there is a strong modernist feel to her work. Today several of her images have become icons of the new photography of that time. Her photographs were also included in the Film und Foto exhibition in 1929 in Stuttgart. Much of her work was confiscated by the National Socialists and a large number of her prints and negatives are still missing. The self-portrait offered here follows in the tradition of Bauhaus portraiture.
