Sherwood was the force behind the Floating Foundation of Photography, a workshop and gallery on a purple barge that was an important part of the New York photography scene in the early 1970's, supported by photographers such as Lisette Model and W. Eugene Smith. It provided facilities and gallery space for young photographers, and offered photography workshops at Sing Sing and other facilities near the Hudson River. It provided a venue for many art events around NY. Sherwood's photographs appeared in many publications, and are in collections such as the Bibliotheque Nationale and the Smithsonian. The Foundation and Sherwood's own work were part of an exhibit at the Dorsky Museum of Art at The State University of New York at New Paltz early in 2009. An exhibition of her photographs and other works from the Foundation will be part of the events surrounding the preview for this auction, announced elsewhere and on the be-hold website. Her photographs show her love of New York, her visionary interests, and an innovative masterful lively style of painting and photographic montage. There are not many extant examples of her one-of-a-kind painted photographs, and they have not previously been on the market. A certificate of authenticity from the Foundation will be supplied. This lot is sold for the benefit of the Foundation.
