Three-quarter length portrait of William Gannaway Brownlow, the Tennessee journalist, itinerant preacher, and politician, seated, right hand tucked in his vest, and newspaper in his lap. Brownlow, although an advocate of slavery, actively opposed Southern secession and was subsequently exiled from the Confederacy during the Civil War.
