J. Gamliel, (17 Grande rue du Vardor in Thessalonika)
1897
Mustafa Celaleddin Bey

Photograph, on card mount
Private collection of Engin Ozendes
The first Ottoman bicycle race was held in the velodrome in Thessalonika in 1897. This velodrome had wooden stands. Early cyclists were sometimes accused of showing off. The race was attended by Enver Pasha and Mustafa Celaleddin Bey, the son of Leyla Kadriye and maternal uncle of the poet Nâzim Hikmet. In this photograph taken in a studio at 17 Grande rue du Vardor in Thessalonika, Mustafa Celaleddin is shown wearing his medals.
