Taunt was always alert to a business opportunity- combined his abilities as photographer and historian to write and publish his map and guide to the Thames entitled "A New Map of the River Thames". This was in fact the earliest photographically illustrated guidebook. The first edition in 1872 came just on the wave of the Thames boom and was rapidly sold out. This book, published in several editions, was written from regular surveys by the author, and gave "every information required by the Tourist, the Oarsman and the Angler". The maps drawn and measured by Taunt himself, are beautifully designed, and were drawn to distances carefully chained along the towing-path from Oxford to London. (Bryan Brown,
The England of Henry Taunt, 1973, p. XXII).
