"Waiting for the stage $20,000 in gold dust on board" (handwritten on verso)

Boudoir card
Cowan's Auctions, Inc
11/17/2017 - American History: Live Salesroom Auction, Lot: 338

Portrait of a baby-faced young man partially leaning on a double barrel shotgun, with a Bowie knife and Smith & Wesson revolver tucked in holsters attached to his belt. The subject wears a wide-brimmed hat and tall leather booths, suggesting that he may have been a hunter. However, the inked note on verso, which reads, "Waiting for the stage $20,000 in gold dust on board," also suggests that he may have been a gold miner. With gilt backmark of P. Britt, Jacksonville, Oregon.
