Robert H. Vance
n.d.
Albumen print copy of a now lost daguerreotype of "James Marshall in front of Sutter's Mill"

Digital scan from a negative
Private collection of Graham Pilecki
In Robert Vance's of 300 whole plates of Gold Rush era California there is a whole plate entitled "Marshall in front of Sutter's Mill" that may be this plate. I'm indebted to Drew Johnson for this information (16 August 2019).

(Graham Pilecki, Facebook, 16 July 2019) "…the story goes that this was taken by Vance. An albumen print copy of it was made by Watkins and a copy negative was made of the print. This is a scan from that negative in my collection.
