On a Hayden Survey mount. The parents and 5 children pose sullenly at the mouth of their wickiup-- canvas supported by a frame of bent saplings. They have sorrowful expressions. This was photographed on the Snake River plateau in Idaho. Slight soil. This view, taken June 11, 1871, is illustrated in Fleming & Luskey, The North American Indians in Early Photographs p. 122. There Jackson is quoted as saying the family was shy, but "a handful of sugar and some coffee reconciled them to having their picture taken." Seven years later most Bannocks were taken prisoner.
