Folder "Types of Jews of Podolia Guberniya " from the album " Types of Podolia and Bessarabia".

By the end of the 19th century, members of the Jewish community made over 40 percent of the city's total population. A large proportion of the Jews had elementary education, and about 1 percent were grammar school graduates. Teachers, lawyers, and doctors formed a noticeable part of the Jewish intelligentsia in the making. Born in Kamenets-Podolsky were the first Jewish satirical writer Mendele Mocher Sforim (Solomon Yanovich Abramovich, 1836-1917), prominent Orientalist scholar Baron David Goratsievich de Günzburg (1857-1910) etc.
