Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) American actor specializing in romantic lead roles and Shakespearian roles. He was the son of English actor E.A.Sothern and was educated in England. In 1904, Sothern began a successful partnership with actress Julia Marlowe, with appearances together in the title roles of Romeo and Juliet, Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and the leads in Hamlet. They toured the US in these roles and became premier Shakespearean actors of their day. Sothern divorced his wife to marry Marlowe in 1911. Sothern also appeared in many early films including The Chattel (1916) and The Man of Mystery (1917). Sothern died in 1933 at the age of 74 after touring and lecturing about Shakespeare.
