This albumen print forms part of Norfolk Record Office holdings from the following archive: Eaton Collection, reference ETN 3/6/6/1-2 (Framed photographs taken by Dr Hugh Welch Diamond, acquired by T.D. Eaton). The 'Catalogue of Exhibits' for an exhibition entitled ' Hugh Welch Diamond, Doctor, Antiquarian and Photographer' (which took place at Twickenham in August 1980) states that this portrait is known as 'Type of insanity'. A Dr Connolly who published 'On the Physiognomy of Insanity' in the 'Medical Times and Gazette' in April 1858, wrote that he 'believed these to be the first attempts of Dr Diamond to delineate by photography, the progressive changes in mental disease'.
