The boy, possibly the daguerreotypist's son, holds a case with an inlay design. There's another case on the table. There is a framed magnifier on a stand, under which a plate is placed, so the image appears on the magnifier surface. This is a rare device that I've never before seen depicted in a daguerreotype.
