Unidentified artist 1753 Illustration from German Lutheran book Sechs Bücher vom wahren Christentum (Six Tracts on True Christianity), 1753
Book illustration Private collection of Jack and Beverly Wilgus A cutaway of a room/box with the image of a naked man projected on the wall though a hole. The caption, "VERFINSTERT UND VERKEHRT" has been variously translated as "Dark and Erroneous" and "Darkened and Wrong" which in the religious context likely means that, like the camera obscura image which is dim, upside down, and reversed the idea being discussed is not correctly seen.
The book Sechs Bücher vom wahren Christentum authored by Johann Arndt (1555-1621) was published posthumously in 1695.
