The photographer who took this image had his studio in Asakusa Koen (Tokyo). The man looking at the book is identified as Yamada Koji. The case is dated Meiji 17 (1884), July 16. In original kirri wood case. Translation of text on case "Meiji year 17 (1884), July 16, photo taken at Tokyo Asakusa Park, portrait of Yamada Kistuji." (Note: the Asakusa Park district was a hotbed of small Tokyo photo studios.)
