The man has on a brimmed hat, one of the most common male headgears in shtetls in the second half of the 19th century (it was worn over a kippah) and peies (payot) on the temples are signs of special religiosity and affiliation to the Jewish people.
The photograph was displayed at the Russian Ethnographic Exhibition of 1867 in Moscow.
