Early Photography. An album containing twelve mounted salt prints by John Nicholas Laverty, Naval Instructor on board HMS Queen, 1854, mounted to album leaf rectos, manuscript contents list to front pastedown, provenance note to front free endpaper, Given to H. C. Innes, October 1863, by John Paton of Grandhome who had received it from W. F. Burnett, ten photographs with additional watercolour, some spotting and old dampstains to mounts, contemp. half morocco over marbled boards, new leather spine and gilt-titled leather label to upper cover, oblong folio, together with a further mounted salt print showing the broadside of HMS Queen, 19 x 24.5cm, ink captions to mount, and pencil note of provenence from Burnett to Innes lower left, some spotting and marginal browning or fraying to mount, plus a somewhat spotted Naval Commission appointing William F. Burnett to be Commander of HMS Queen, 3rd July 1852. The photographs in the album as indexed show: 1) The Admiral's House, Devonport (hand coloured; 18.5 x 24cm). 2) Rocks near the landing place, Mount Wise (oval print, hand coloured; 14 x 16.5cm). 3) Starboard quarter, HMS Queen (duplicate of loose photograph, partly hand coloured; 19 x 24cm). 4) View near the landing place, Mount Wise (oval print, hand coloured; 13.5 x 16cm). 5) The Commodore's House, Devonport Dockyard (sky hand coloured; 19 x 24.5cm). 6) View forward from the poop, HMS Queen (circular print, partly hand coloured; 15.5cm diameter). 7) Victoria College, Jersey (hand coloured; 19 x 24.5cm). 8) The poop, HMS Queen (Captain Michell & Commander F. Burnett identified in a pencil to upper margin; 19 x 24.5cm). 9) St. Saviour's Church, Jersey (hand coloured; 19 x 25cm). 10) HMS Queen, from a painting by Captain White (hand coloured; 18.5 x 24.5cm). 11) Starboard bow, HMS Queen (partly hand coloured in sea area; 19 x 24cm). 12) HMS Agamemnon in the harbour of Balaklava (19 x 24.5cm) [deduced to be the earliest known photograph of Balaklava, preceding those of Roger Fenton and James Robertson].
