The Fripps were a wealthy South Carolina family who owned several cotton plantations and slaves in the Saint Helena Island and Beaufort area. Cotton grown on Saint Helena, the other Sea Islands and Georgia consisted of a long-staple fiber used for the finest cotton. Sea Island cotton brought the highest prices, and Beaufort became a wealthy and cosmopolitan town because of the lucrative crop.
